Biography
As a child, Xavier Fettweis was already a budding meteorologist thanks to a small weather station installed at his parents' house. In 1996, when it was decision time, he entrusted it to his father and went to study for a degree in maths at ULiege, with the intention of becoming a maths teacher.
During his degree, he developed a taste for research and teaching at university level. Furthermore, he realised that his passion for meteorology had not waned. He therefore decided to continue and complete his training with a post-graduate diploma in climatology at UCLouvain. He then started working on his PhD on the climate modelling of Greenland at the G. Lemaître Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics at UCLouvain with the Prof. Jean-Pascall van Ypersele. He presented his thesis in 2006.
Since his return to ULiege in September 2007, he has continued his work on modelling the melt of the Greenland ice sheet in the Laboratory of Climatology who heads from Sep 2017, first as a FNRS research associate (2013-2022) and now, as a full professor since 2025. He leads the development of the regional climate model MAR notably used to study the surface mass balance and melt of both polar ice sheets, climate change over Belgium, France or to perform weather forecast. He has also developed a circulation type classification to study the recent general atmospheric circulation changes in summer driving the recent melt acceleration over the Greenland ice sheet. Finally, he is vice-dean of research (Sciences Faculty) from Oct 2025.
